Renault Megane Sport Tourer

The estate version of the big-bottomed Megane shows that cars can be controversial and still look good. It offers bold styling in a sector where conservatism rules, but Renault seems to have pulled it off. Load space is enormous for a mid-sized car, prices are keen, equipment levels are good and the diesel engine is strong enough to satisfy company car drivers. Plus, a five-star Euro NCAP rating makes it one of the safest cars in its class.

All Meganes are well-equipped for the money and the estate is no exception. Air-con, CD player and tons of safety kit on even the base model. The range is simpler than on the hatchback, and the trim levels progress upwards from Expression to Dynamique to Privilege.
