Renault Clio

This Clio retains the classless character of the previous two generations, despite styling changes in 2001 to bring the looks more into line with the rest of the Renault range. It offers buyers more choice than other small cars, with a huge number of trim options, a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, the 172/182 hot hatch and even a manic V6. The diesel will do 70mpg, while the Sport182 is a genuine hot-hatch for family money. With an enormous range, there's a Clio for everyone.

Pretty good on the whole so long as you avoid the base model Authentique. But even this gets ABS, electric front windows and passenger airbag.
