Mitsubishi Carisma

This close relative of the higher-priced previous-generation Volvo S40 lacks the Volvo's status. Image aside, Carisma is a user-friendly family car, although neither its styling nor its performance are remarkable. Its redeeming qualities are competitive prices, generous specs and above-average reliability. Running costs are also very reasonable.

DI-D, SE, GDI, TD

Basic spec 1.6i has tilt-adjustable steering column, tinted glass, and four-speaker stereo. Classic adds electric front windows and air-conditioning. Equippe has electric sunroof and driver’s seat lumbar support. 1.8 GDI Sport has 15in alloys, leather-trimmed steering wheel and six-speaker stereo. Elegance has a wood/leather trimmed steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, part-leather trim and electric rear windows. 1.8 GDI Mirage (from April '01) has uprated Equippe specification, alloy wheels. 1.9 DI-D Mirage (Mar '02) has uprated common rail turbo-diesel engine.
