SL originally stood for Sports Light, but it certainly isn't light these days. No matter, with a choice of engines you can chose just how quickly you reach terminal velocity, and which ever you choose they're all electronically governed to 155mph. That's plenty with the roof down. And what a roof. The finest folding hard top available compliments a beautifully elegant body that draws looks with the roof up or down. As long as you only need to carry one other person then SL makes a strong claim to being the best car in the world.

Standards of trim are fairly comprehensive - even the SL350 gets the essential luxuries, comprehensive safety equipment and of course that trick electric folding hard-top. SL500 has automatic climate control, bi-xenon headlights, a CD autochanger, Mercedes’ COMAND navigation and audio system, heated leather seats and metallic paint. SL 55 AMG adds a full AMG body kit, aluminium cabin trim in place of wood, sports seats, an AMG steering wheel, two twin-exhaust pipes, steering wheel paddle shift control for automatic transmission, and a Bose audio system.
