Audi A3

More than a posh Golf, at least in terms of image. Underneath, you'd be surprised how much is shared. The A3 is more plush inside, a tad quieter and every bit as enjoyable to drive. But it costs a lot of money and standard equipment levels could be better. The new generation FSI engines claim diesel-like economy with petrol smoothness. We're not convinced about the economy.

Lots of safety kit and subliminal luxury (like soundproofing) - but few toys on the base models despite the high price.
